Student Teaching Evaluations and Comments
VMC 991-008: Equine Colic Selective
These student evaluations were completed to evaluate my participation in VMC 991-008 in December 2012. For this portion of the selective, I taught a 2.5 hour lecture on Clinical Work-up of Colic. This was my second time teaching this class and based on evaluations I received from the first time teaching, I had added YouTube videos of horses colicking.
The class consisted of 12 first, second and third year veterinary students.

VMC 949 - Equine Primary Care
I had the pleasure to meet Dr. Sheats during the EPC rotation. It was apparent even on the first day that she was a wonderful and thorough professor. During the first week each student rotated through 4-5 mock experiences involving client communication in lameness, wound repair, respiratory disease, and colic. Each of these mock scenarios were extremely helpful in practicing our client communications while integrating the knowledge we have incurred over 3 years of veterinary schooling. During the first week, we also saw primary care appointments, in which we vaccinated or performed dentals on client horses. She was extremely helpful during this time, as I have had less clinical experience than other students in this rotation. I was able to have personal instruction with performing dentals, which allowed me to practice each dental correctly and to the best of my ability. Dr. Sheats was wonderful with giving one on one instruction and advice during this rotation. She really went above and beyond with her instruction. Our final task of the first week was to perform a pre-purchase exam, of which she was my examiner. She had a wonderful review and helpful criticism for moving forward in completing my next pre-purchase exam. Even outside this rotation she was a great help. I was on another equine rotation when she was holding an undergraduate lab for equine focus students. During this lab they were learning rectal palpation. Even though she was done with the lab, she gave up her free time to help some of the fourth year students hone in their rectal palpation skills. This was a great experience.
Dr. Sheats would be a great permanent addition to the equine primary care rotation, especially since she has the drive to continually improve the new rotation.
